You may be aware that there is a “global attack” underway on systems that run Windows. Some major networks have been infected by so called “ransomware” – a malicious code that encrypts files and demands a ransom in exchange for their safe return.
Experts have advised that this attack on the Windows operating system is likely to continue all week and that new variants have been discovered over the weekend.
Do not panic! Please observe the following simple tasks and you should be safe.
- If you use Windows, Microsoft has released a patch to block the specific exploit that the WannaCry ransomware is using. Run Windows Update to check your PC is up to date.
- Update your Antivirus software definitions ASAP and run a complete scan.
- Backup your files regularly and make sure you have offline backups. That way, if you are infected with ransomware, it can’t encrypt your backups.
- Finally, as a rule, always be wary of email attachments – especially if you do not recognise the source.
