Following the decision of the crime prevention unit to cut back on text alerts and to consider outsourcing the service to a private company, the free text messages offered via this website have been discontinued.
At a time when it has been revealed that a private company is paid €1.2m per month to operate speed vans on our roads, it strikes me as absurd that an important crime prevention tool could now be cut by An Garda Síochána.
The scheme has worked well, especially in rural communities such as this. While the costs to be imposed on Community Alert schemes (and others) have yet to be realised, it is likely that a number will not be able to afford the cost of subscribing to a new service.
That’s progress for you.
