A section of the N52 has been closed between Cloughan and Killynon, resulting in diversions along routes that quite frankly cannot cope with the vehicles being expected to use them.

At the time of writing this article, Westmeath County Council has placed a sign at the junction with the N51 outside the Greyhound Bar to alert oncoming traffic to the road closure. Aside from the fact that the sign implies that Delvin is closed (WHICH IT IS NOT), the position has caused some difficulty for motorists travelling up the hill from Athboy.

In addition – and of more immediate concern – is the positioning of signs on the R395 at Clonagapple. Locals will be aware that there is a 90 degree bend on this route. Despite this, signs from both directions are alerting motorists to the fact that “oncoming trucks may be in the middle of the road”.

Westmeath County Council has been approached for comment.
